With a 520-foot-long loadbearing colonnade, reputedly the longest in the world, the New York State Education Building is a landmark in downtown Albany. The fifth floor of this historic structure was renovated to create
modern office facilities for the State Education Department. Three steel-framed, curved, cantilevered mezzanines, which blend harmoniously with the original architectural details, were designed to provide an additional 15,000 square feet of floor space. RBA
performed structural analysis and design of the mezzanines, and structural design of catwalks and stairs for the attic area, which required interfacing new structural components with complicated mechanical systems. In later phases of the project, RBA designed
mezzanines for the second and third floors. The firm was subsequently retained by the Office of General Services to perform investigation of the marble and terracotta exterior facade of the building, followed by design of repairs. RBA developed details for the
cleaning and masonry repairs of the columns, facade, and portico walkway.
