South Mall Arterial Ramp CA
Albany, New York

Five spans of Ramp CA from the eastbound arterial exiting the Empire State Plaza to Interstate I-787 were widened from one lane to two lanes as required to provide for increased traffic from a new parking garage built adjacent to the Plaza. Spans 4 and 5 were completely replaced while Spans 1, 2, and 3 were widened by adding new steel plate girders with additional concrete deck area. Plate girders were over 5 feet deep and spanned up to 165 feet. The project also involved partial and/or full-depth repairs to the bridge decks at 20 other spans, upgraded railing systems, upgraded drainage systems, and modifications to six piers. The work was staggered over two years, and vehicular traffic was maintained throughout the work except for a period of about 2 months when Spans 4 and 5 were replaced.
